SGT Guinea Pig
It's another extra-long drill weekend on the path to deployment. Apparently we'll be running about the armory in our field gear for "warrior tasks". This used to be called Common Task Training (CTT), but apparently it wasn't sufficiently studly sounding. Personally, I think it sounds like a bunch of people running around in loincloths with spears, but I'm just a peon, so "warrior tasks" it is.
But there is one truly dangerous, soldierly thing I'll definitely be doing this weekend. And here it is:
Is the 2000 year of production Four Fingers of Death MRE I pulled out of my emergency stash still edible?
We'll find out!

I'm not so sure they were edible in 2000...
Hey, I liked the franks! They were the perfect cargo-pocket meal. You could pack 'em around all day long in the field and they didn't take up much space.
Now, Chicken ala King? Couldn't stand it. And the best meal ever is no longer with us - Pork Chow Mein.
BobG,
I usually chopped them up and mixed them in the beans. I started out with no-heater dark brown bag MREs, and at the time the hot dogs were a step up from the dehydrated beef or pork patty soaked in cold water.
RD,
They were definitely better than the CAK. Tried it. Once. Went hungry a couple times rather than eat it again, as I usually couldn't find someone willing to trade for it. The pork chow mein was good, especially with the noodles thrown in. Worst ever: Country Captain Chicken. Again, I'd rather go hungry. Iraqi dogs seemed to favor it though.
Haven't eaten too many MRE's myself. I'm still carrying around one of these guys that I got off a can of beans and wienies back in 1968. Some of the old C-rats weren't too bad.
