looks like an old battle-rifle cut waaay down. but why?

It was noted as a "beater" M44 Mosin-Nagant. Beater is a relative term, as I've seen metal and wood in far worse condition than the one pictured.

It's a one-off, but find the right gunsmith......
Its called an Obrez, its a cut down Mosin Nagant.
